How to check for fake Instagram followers on any profile

Whether you are vetting an influencer, a competitor or your own account, a few minutes of checking tells you most of what you need to know.

Start with the engagement maths

Add up likes and comments on the last ten posts, divide by ten, then divide by the follower count. Typical accounts land somewhere around 1% to 5%. A 50,000-follower account averaging 80 likes is worth a closer look. Our engagement calculator does the sums for you.

Look at the follower list itself

  • Many accounts with no profile picture, no posts or random strings of numbers in the name.
  • Lots of followers who follow thousands of accounts but have few followers themselves.
  • Clusters of very similar names or bios.

Check the comments, not just the count

Generic comments such as “Nice!” or a row of emojis across every post, from accounts that never post themselves, are a common sign of bought engagement. Real comments usually mention the content.

Watch for sudden jumps

Third-party tracking tools show follower history. A flat line followed by a vertical jump of thousands in a day suggests a large purchase. Steady curves are more normal.

If the follower list is your own

If you have bought followers before, you may see some of the signs above on your own list. That is expected. What matters for your page is that posts keep getting engagement from your real audience.

What to do if an influencer looks off

Ask for screenshots of insights: reach, impressions and audience location. Genuine creators share these happily. Under UK advertising rules, creators also need to be upfront with followers about paid partnerships.

Removing suspicious followers from your account

You can remove followers one by one from your own follower list. Instagram also removes accounts it considers inauthentic over time, which is why counts sometimes drop on their own.

Questions about fake followers

What engagement rate suggests fake followers?

There is no single cut-off, but well under 1% on a large account, with generic comments, is a common warning sign.

Can I see who bought followers?

Not with certainty. You can only see patterns that suggest it.

Should I remove fake followers from my account?

You can, but it is slow by hand. Focus on posting for your real audience; the ratio improves as they grow.
